Software

This page lists some of the software used on oneIgloo's servers. Please be aware that there is a huge catalog of both "behind the scenes" and user-level software available. If you require software that is not listed, please send an inquiry to support@oneigloo.com. (Note that because of its memory requirements, we do not support Java in the shared hosting environment.)

freebsd

"FreeBSD is an advanced operating system for x86 compatible (including Pentium® and Athlon), amd64 compatible (including Opteron, Athlon 64, and EM64T), Alpha/AXP, IA-64, PC-98 and UltraSPARC® architectures. It is derived from BSD, the version of UNIX® developed at the University of California, Berkeley."

The FreeBSD operating system, version 4.11-STABLE, is used on all of oneIgloo's web and mail server machines.

Slackware

"The Official Release of Slackware Linux by Patrick Volkerding is an advanced Linux operating system, designed with the twin goals of ease of use and stability as top priorities. Including the latest popular software while retaining a sense of tradition, providing simplicity and ease of use alongside flexibility and power, Slackware brings the best of all worlds to the table."

oneIgloo runs Slackware Linux 10.0 (Linux kernel 2.6.10) on a few servers. Linux is used for miscellaneous duties and is available for whatever linux-unique applications might be required (we haven't encountered any yet, since we enable FreeBSD's linux compatability module, but who knows?).

oneIgloo runs Slackware Linux 9.1 (Linux kernel 2.4.22 with patch-2.4.22-ac4.bz2 to enable the use of SATA drives) on its monitoring machines.

NetBSD

"NetBSD is a free, secure, and highly portable Unix-like Open Source operating system available for many platforms, from 64-bit Opteron machines and desktop systems to handheld and embedded devices."

The NetBSD operating system powers oneIgloo's Sun machines.

apache

Apache has been the most popular web server on the Internet since April 1996. The February 2006 Netcraft Web Server Survey found that 68% of the web sites on the Internet are using Apache.

mod_SSL

"This module provides strong cryptography for the Apache 1.3 webserver via the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL v2/v3) and Transport Layer Security (TLS v1) protocols by the help of the Open Source SSL/TLS toolkit OpenSSL, which is based on SSLeay from Eric A. Young and Tim J. Hudson."

MySQL

"The MySQL® database has become the world's most popular open source database because of its consistent fast performance, high reliability and ease of use. It's used in more than 8 million installations ranging from large corporations to specialized embedded applications on every continent in the world. (Yes, even Antarctica!)"

"Not only is MySQL the world's most popular open source database, it's also become the database of choice for a new generation of applications built on the LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP / Perl / Python.) MySQL runs on more than 20 platforms including Linux, Windows, OS/X, HP-UX, AIX, Netware, giving you the kind of flexibility that puts you in control."

PHP

"PHP is a widely-used general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML."

Darwin

Darwin Streaming Server is the open source version of Apple's QuickTime Streaming Server technology. It is intended for developers who need to stream QuickTime and MPEG-4 media on alternative platforms.

Postfix

"Postfix attempts to be fast, easy to administer, and secure, while at the same time being sendmail compatible enough to not upset existing users. Thus, the outside has a sendmail-ish flavor, but the inside is completely different."

Postfix is used by oneIgloo as its main mail transport agent.

Sendmail

Sendmail is the best-known mail transport agent. oneIgloo runs Sendmail on a secondary email server, partly for historical/nostalgic reasons, but also because it is very stable under load and, if configured properly, quite secure. It can probably handle every possible mail transport scheme.

SpamAssassin

oneIgloo runs SpamAssassin on all of its email servers. It is an email filter which identifies most unsolicited commercial email (spam).

Tcl

"Tcl (Tool Command Language) is a very powerful but easy to learn dynamic programming language, suitable for a very wide range of uses, including web and desktop applications, networking, administration, testing and many more. Open source and business-friendly, Tcl is a mature yet evolving language that is truly cross platform, easily deployed and highly extensible."

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, er, igloo, er, office...

In our office, we use Mac OS X (Jaguar 10.2.8, and Tiger 10.4.3) and Slackware 10.2 (with the Linux 2.4.31 kernel). We have a PC running Windows XP Home Edition (with SP2) so that we can write accurate documentation for our Windows XP users.
